Sycorax | Indian Metal Scene

Kolkata-based old school thrash metal band Mortar is gearing up for an eventful month ahead! The band has raged with a good deal of no-bullshit thrash assault ever since its inception and is all set to play the first crowd-funded gig in Kolkata, following which they will be touring two cities in the North-East.

On May 3, Mortar will be playing Forged In fire II in Kolkata alongside other superlative bands from the city and the North East. Forged In Fire II is a wonderful initiative by Kolkata Old School Metal Association and is the first of its kind being organized out of funds voluntarily contributed by metalheads.

Besides Mortar, the line-up features Necrodeity, Purgation Inc., Deadbolt, Wicked Child and Das Hubris.

Right after, on May 8, Mortar will be playing Metal Mayhem VI hosted by Rocka Rolla Events in Guwahati alongside other thrash and death metal bands from the East.

The line-up for Metal Mayhem also includes Plague Throat, Agnostic, Sycorax, Cynical Project and Psybarite.

Following this, the band will play Callous Amass in the famous Polo Grounds in Shillong on May 10. Callous Amass aims at enhancing the metal scene in the North East and also features a brilliant line-up of thrash and death metal bands- Meth, Rival Storm, Sycorax, Undead, Agnostic, Raped Jihad and Plague Throat.

North-East Death Fest

Adrenaline Events in association with Rocka Rolla will be hosting North-East Death Fest in Guwahati on January 20. The event is the first of its kind to grace the East and the line-up boasts of dominantly death metal bands.

-THE BANDS-

SHADES OF RETRIBUTION (Death Metal, Duliajan, Assam)

Formed in 2010, Shades of Retribution who play ‘skull crushing death metal’ are one of the very few regional language metal bands in the country and write songs in the native Assamese language. The fruit of their uphill battle was well showcased in their debut EP Xongram which received rave reviews. Shades of Retribution’s sound is rendered estimable by fire-breathing growls, surprising clean vocals at times and an old school essence to the sound of the instruments. The pure Assamese lyrics augment the originality of the band.

PLAGUE THROAT (Death Metal, Shillong)

Plague Throat, formed in 2006 has stirred the underground by being one of the best live acts in the country. Plague Throat is seasoned musicians making solid, blasting death metal. The band released their debut EP An Exordium to Contagion in 2013 through Incanned Productions. This three-piece band is death metal devoid of unnecessary frills and delivers precise, well-arranged music.

SYCORAX (Thrash/ Death Metal, Darjeeling)

Sycorax is a thrash/ death, self-proclaimed as ‘pavitra Gorkha metal’ outfit hailing from Darjeeling. Since their inception in 2011, Sycorax ripened through outstanding live performances at prestigious events in cities including Calcutta, Mumbai and Bangalore. Sycorax draws inspiration from bands like Psycroptic, Aborted, Megadeth and Slayer and were finalists of the Wacken Metal Battle, 2013.

ARIHANT (Progressive/ Technical Death Metal, Guwahati)

Arihant is a three-piece experimental/ technical death metal band formed in 2011. Arihant derives inspiration from bands like Death, Nile, Disavowed, Behemoth and Deicide and write songs, narrative of atrocious consequences of ‘deadly human deeds’.

CORPULENT DEFORMITY (Experimental Deathcore, Kurseong, West Bengal)

Corpulent Deformity, formed in 2012 steers clear from the predictability of any particular sub-genre. The varying tastes of the band members concerning sub-genres fostered the originality of the band’s sound which they named ‘experimental deathcore’. The band has caused shockwaves in the underground by winning a surfeit of competitions as well.

DISFIGURED SAVIOUR (Grindcore/ Deathcore/ Slam Death, Guwahati)

Formed in 2010, Disfigured Saviour hailing from Guwahati draws inspiration from the likes of Cannibal Corpse, Dying Fetus and Suicide Silence and deliver their unique make of aggressive and technically intricate music.

ETERNAL DISSECTION (Death/ Thrash Metal, Kokrajhar, Assam)

Eternal Dissection, formed in 2009 is an underground death/ thrash metal band who have asserted their musicality in a range of underground shows. The band’s sound assimilates an old-school essence with new-age death metal elements. Eternal Dissection writes music, mostly on lyrical themes of society and politics.
